Soon after there was an interesting TV program on Harrison and the immense work he put in to solve the problem of Longitude. I managed to see these instruments when I visited Greenwich in 2002. I own a Hamilton Chronometer of WWII vintage. A cell phone today has more accurate time than our national observatories did in the WWII era. It is interesting to note, that today, a $2 quartz wristwatch from a convenience store keeps better time than the best chronometers we could supply to our ships in WWII. It is titled, simply, 'Longitude' and is published by Harper Perennial.Ī fabulously interesting story! Clocks and watches are one of my hobbies, and I read this long ago, and had read everything I could find on the subject prior to that. If you haven't already read it, Harrison's quest to find an answer to the 'Longitude Problem' is the subject of a book by Dava Sobel.
